Favouring a DIY approach, Gold Spectacles, a London-based musical duo, has carved a unique niche in the realm of baroque-pop music. Their sonic journey draws inspiration from a diverse array of influences, seamlessly blending elements from Paul Simon to Phoenix to Lykke Li. In a musical landscape that often delineates between electronic and organic sounds, Gold Spectacles confidently treads the line, creating a distinctive palette that captivates listeners. The duo’s musical journey took a significant leap with the release of their eponymous debut album in 2019. This project was met with acclaim, securing coveted spots on Spotify playlists like Chill Vibes, All New Indie, and New Music Friday UK. Their music resonated across the airwaves, finding support from esteemed radio platforms including BBC 6 Music, KCRW, Amazing Radio, and CISM 89.3. Blogs such as Indie Shuffle, EARMILK, Hillydilly, and Line of Best Fit also joined the chorus of praise. Gold Spectacles’ rising popularity was further underscored by their frequent presence at the top of the Hype Machine. Having established themselves as a force to be reckoned with, Gold Spectacles embarked on a prolific start to 2023. As producers, they collaborated on tracks with Mysie, SOFY, Johnny Stimson, and Viddy, showcasing their versatility in the industry. Simultaneously, the duo was hard at work on their own musical endeavor—an EP titled “More Heart Than Sense Pt. 2.”The first glimpse into this upcoming EP comes in the form of their newest single, “PseudoFriends.” In this track, Gold Spectacles intricately explores the paradox of superficial connections that often masquerade as genuine friendships. In an era dominated by social media and digital interactions, the boundaries between authentic and fraudulent relationships can blur, creating a landscape of uncertainty. Setting the scene for “PseudoFriends” is a warm mellotron, playful guitar riffs, and a weighty, hypnotic bassline. These elements, coupled with the distinctive interplay between the two vocalists, encapsulate the hallmark sound of Gold Spectacles. The track serves as a musical commentary on the challenges of discerning true allies from those who may not have our best interests at heart. “We’ve been sitting on this one for a little while. The bassline came first. We spent a few hours jamming to it before we had solidified the lyrics. The rest then followed pretty quickly. We had just got off the phone with an old friend who had been really let down by her mates, and we wanted to write about this and the idea of not ever knowing who to put your trust in. Being burnt by who you think are dependable protagonists in your life is never fun. Don’t worry, they’re doing a lot better now!” With “PseudoFriends,” Gold Spectacles invites us into a sonic journey that delves into the complexities of modern relationships, urging us to reflect on the authenticity of the connections we form in an increasingly digital world. As they continue to pave their musical path, Gold Spectacles’ ability to blend profound narratives with compelling soundscapes ensures their place in the forefront of contemporary music.
