Upcoming artist Seki takes influences from Tears for Fears, The 1975, and The Strokes, SEKI creates a shoegaze-inflected indie-pop sound, rich with layered harmonies and instantly-memorable melodies. Although a newcomer to the Thai music scene, SEKI nonetheless has deeply embedded roots in Thai musical history. His mother was a guitarist for Bird Thongchai (‘Phi Bird’), one of the most successful singers in Thailand’s history, having sold over 25 million albums. However, it was SEKI’s father who was perhaps the biggest influence on his taste in music, regularly taking him to the local flea market to scour for second-hand cassettes. It was in listening to these cassettes on the ride home that SEKI began to develop his love for singing, influenced by the falsetto vocals and new wave synth sounds of artists like the Bee Gees, Tears for Fears, and The Psychedelic Furs. SEKI channels these retro influences into a simple yet meticulously crafted sound, developing sparse arrangements into an indie-cinematic sound where each musical part plays its own distinctive role, overlaid with lushly-layered harmonies. Taking his 80s writing influences, SEKI pairs them with the contemporary production styles of The 1975, The Strokes, and Hippo Campus to carve out a shoegaze-inflected sound sharply juxtaposed with instantaneous pop melodies and catchy synth hooks. Following the release of his newest single “Need A Moment,” he projects a nostalgic sound that will surely grasp your attention. Beginning with dreamy instrumentation leading onto his sweet and luscious vocals he captures the song entirely. Explaining the track further it’s about evoking the importance of living in the moment, taking the opportunity to celebrate those we love. After the impact of a now 2-year-long pandemic, the track’s mood is welcomingly uplifting – perhaps surprising given the personal toll of the impact on SEKI, who lost his job as part of Thailand’s drastic economic downturn. However, it was only after finding himself out of work that SEKI took to writing songs, seizing the opportunity afforded to him by the unexpected free time. To the vocals and production, this single will certainly have you vibing. Being just perfect for a late-night drive or alone within your thoughts. Go stream “Need A Moment”.
