Mokina’s music has always carried the weight of wanderlust, a sonic passport stamped with influences from her Montreal roots to her Portuguese present. Since 2018, she has been steadily carving out her place in the indie scene, amassing millions of streams and taking her sound across stages from New York to Lisbon. Now, from her studio by the Lusitanian coast, where the waves crash in a rhythm as steady as her creativity, she introduces “True,” the first glimpse into her upcoming project Mirage.
With Mirage, Mokina leans into the fragile beauty of illusions—love, attraction, expectations, and the eventual act of letting go. The project, woven together in English, French, and Portuguese, carries the kind of intimacy that feels like reading an old love letter, each word carefully chosen to expose the weight of emotions once held dear. “True” opens the door to this world, blending indie, alternative, and folk elements into something raw yet ethereal, something that lingers like a dream just before waking.
Created alongside longtime collaborator Jeremy Lachance, the track carries a sense of place—rooted in the Portuguese coastline where it was written, shaped by the ebb and flow of the tide, the golden hues of a setting sun, the solitude that breeds introspection. The sound is unforced, organic, and deeply personal, a reflection of Mokina’s ability to turn her surroundings into melody.
The visual world of “True” is just as intentional. Filmed on location by Polish videographer Magda Benda, the imagery captures the quiet tension between reality and perception, mirroring the themes of Mirage. The collaboration breathes life into the song, translating its emotions into something tangible, a visual echo of the music’s delicate unraveling.
With the release of “True,” Mokina sets the stage for what’s to come—a journey through the highs and lows of love, through languages and landscapes, through the moments that feel the most real just before they disappear. Mirage promises to be an exploration of the heart’s deceptions, a reminder that sometimes, what we chase isn’t what we need, and what we let go of was never truly ours to hold.
