Julia Logan’s music feels like a balm for uncertain times. With her dreamy blend of folk-pop, she has a way of capturing the small, intimate moments of human connection that so often slip through the cracks in our fast-paced world. There’s a gentle strength in her voice—both comforting and piercing—that seems to yearn for a simpler, more forgiving era. Born on a small island outside of Stockholm, Sweden, Julia’s musical journey began in the quiet surroundings of a church choir. Her path took an unexpected turn when she spent part of her teenage years in southern California, where she learned guitar from a local hippie. It was during these years that she started to write, merging her experiences from both sides of the Atlantic into a sound that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
Her debut album, Everly Foreverly, was a collaboration with producer Daniel Bengtson, best known for his work with First Aid Kit. Together with an ensemble that included American drummer Kyle Crane and guitarist Peter Morén, Julia’s first project offered listeners a glimpse into her world of wistful melodies and soft but persistent longing. The album struck a chord, showcasing Julia’s unique ability to craft songs that feel personal yet universally relatable.
Now, she is preparing to release her sophomore album, Faraway Nearby, a record inspired by the work of painter Georgia O’Keeffe. This album delves deeper into personal themes—fears, changes, isolation, loss, aging, hope, and the search for one’s place in the world. Co-written and produced once again by Bengtson, the album takes sonic inspiration from the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Midlake, Bruce Springsteen, and Lucio Battisti. Many of the tracks were written on piano and acoustic guitar, lending a melancholic yet hopeful tone to the record. It is an album that invites the listener to sit with their emotions, to feel the weight of solitude and the flicker of hope that follows.
The latest single, Moodswings, is a standout track from the upcoming album. Produced in collaboration with Bengtson, who has also worked with artists like M. Ward and James Yorkston, the song feels energetic while retaining Julia’s signature warmth. There’s an honesty in Moodswings, an openness about the ebbs and flows of emotion, that is instantly relatable. It’s the kind of song that feels like a companion through life’s ups and downs, grounding in its sincerity.
Released under her new label Dumont Dumont, home to artists like RY X and Charlie Cunningham, Moodswings is Julia’s third single from this new phase of her career. The label’s founder, who helped launch José González, clearly sees something special in Julia, and it’s not hard to understand why. Her ability to blend genres and evoke complex emotions is rare and deeply compelling.
Having toured with acts like Neko Case, Sara Klang, and Madison Cunningham, Julia is no stranger to captivating live audiences. Fans can look forward to seeing her on tour again in Fall 2024 and Spring/Summer 2025, where she will undoubtedly bring the same heartfelt energy that defines her recordings. As anticipation builds for the release of Faraway Nearby, set for November 1st, listeners can pre-order the album on vinyl and digital platforms, ensuring they’re among the first to experience the next chapter in Julia Logan’s ever-evolving musical journey.
