London-based musical duo Gold Spectacles has been making waves with their unique blend of baroque-pop music since their 2019 eponymous debut album. Favouring a DIY approach, the duo draws on an eclectic range of influences, including Paul Simon, Phoenix, and Lykke Li, to create a sonic palette that toes the line between electronic and organic landscapes. Their debut album was well received, achieving notable Spotify playlistings, support from radio stations and blogs, and multiple top spots on Hype Machine. Now, the duo is gearing up for the release of their upcoming EP, “More Heart than Sense”, with the third single “Anywhere Else” leading the way. The track, which features a driving riff played on an OP-1 synth, blends a Spanish guitar, vintage Hammond organ, and energetic bassline to create a playful and danceable beat with subtle nods to Bombay Bicycle Club and Phoenix. The single retains all the hallmarks of Gold Spectacles’ sound while setting itself apart from the rest of the EP. According to the duo, “Anywhere Else” was written on a trip to Barcelona, their first time abroad since the pandemic. They recorded all the parts on their phones with a rough sketch of the vocal line and pieced together the lyrics in tapas bars and on the metro. The desire to leave everything mundane behind was overwhelming, and the thought of running away never looked so good. As soon as they got back to London, they went straight to the studio to finish it. The duo ended up keeping some of the Spanish guitar they recorded on the voice memos as a reminder of the trip. “Anywhere Else” showcases Gold Spectacles’ ability to create infectious and memorable tracks while staying true to their unique sound. Gold Spectacles’ upcoming EP promises to be a musical journey worth taking. With their DIY approach and diverse range of influences, the duo is sure to continue making a name for themselves in the world of baroque-pop music.
