Tom Harker, a 32-year-old musician originally from San Diego, California, has been living in France since 2012. By day, he is an English teacher in the northern city of Lille, but his true passion lies in music. Tom has been playing the piano and clarinet since he was five and studied music composition in college. Although he only recently started making electro-pop music, he already has two albums and a few singles on streaming platforms. His most recent single is, “Easily,”.
“Easily” is a catchy synth/dance-pop number with some disco elements. The song tackles the infamous concept of “friend-zoning,” a situation where romantic feelings are not reciprocated, leaving one person hoping for more than just friendship. In “Easily,” Tom takes the point of view of the person who must reject or repel the advances of another. With an ironic tone, the song captures the awkwardness and humor of such situations while still making you want to dance.
The inspiration for “Easily” comes from a relatable scenario: a night of passion followed by a very awkward morning when one person refuses to leave, revealing an asymmetry in their expectations and desires. The protagonist laments how people fall in love with him at first sight, yet he always has to gently push them away because he’s not necessarily looking for the love of his life.
Tom composed the instrumental for “Easily” himself, featuring a funky syncopated bassline, bubblegum-pop percussion, video game-style synths, and a groovy guitar. The track is available on all streaming platforms and on his YouTube channel, @tomharkermusic.
