Fernandez Unveils Her Distinct Sound with “No Body”

Australian singer and songwriter Fernandez is a true musical chameleon. Her music defies categorization as she effortlessly straddles genres like Alt Pop, Roots, Jazz, Soul, and Cinematic Trip-hop. Her vocal style is persuasive and captivating, and her talent has been recognized since her collaboration debut album “Fernandez and Wright, Unsung” with guitarist Steve Wright released in 2009. In her newest single “No Body,” Fernandez takes on the role of both friend and femme fatale within an epic soundscape. The song is filled with drama and intensity as her tender yet dynamic vocals shine amidst a lush cinematic backdrop reminiscent of the 50s and 60s Bond era. Sweeping old Hollywood strings meet tremolo guitar and 60s keyboards in a new genre that sits at the sweet crossroad between alt pop, retro, alternative soul, chamber pop, and trip hop. Early in 2022, Fernandez released a self-produced five-track EP that gave fans a glimpse into her sound. During the same period, she worked steadily on her soon-to-be-released solo album, produced by acclaimed Australian producer Greg J Walker. Best known for his work under the critically acclaimed moniker Machine Translations, Walker has produced award-winning albums for Australian and New Zealand artists, including Paul Kelly, Tiny Ruins, Jess Ribeiro, and C.W Stoneking, as well as composing soundtracks for film and TV, including the global phenomenon that is the Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries franchise.”No Body” was written by Fernandez, and after spending time with Walker, they came up with a concept that would marry the strengths of both artists and create a distinct sound. Developed over a three-year period, the album is a homage to cinematic music and is reminiscent of artists like Bernard Hermann, Portishead, and Bjork. Like the concept behind the 2011 “ROME” album by Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi, this first single is underpinned by strong lyrical imagery that feels both new and familiar. Sounds once heard on the cinema screen marry with an exploration of new sonic possibilities. Fernandez’s music is inspired by a wide range of artists, including Portishead, Air, Bernard Hermann, Bjork, James Bond, The Andrew Sisters, The Beatles, Massive Attack, and Sarah Vaughan. Her music also has elements of blues and soul from the 40s to the 70s, adding yet another layer of richness to her already eclectic sound. One thing that stands out about Fernandez’s music is her vocal range and control. She commands attention with her vocals, leaning into her dynamism as a singer. Whether she’s being tender and svelte or desperate in her appeal, she always sings about the loss or expression of worth and the human experience. In a world where music is often pigeonholed into genres, Fernandez’s music is a refreshing departure from the norm. She creates a sound that is uniquely hers, pulling inspiration from a variety of sources and weaving them together into something truly remarkable. “No Body” is just the beginning of what promises to be a cinematic journey of sound and emotion that will captivate and inspire music fans everywhere.
