Andrew Shier is a Canadian musical artist with a passion for creativity. Born into a family with a deep love of music, Andrew was surrounded by music from a young age. His great-grandfather was a Canadian big band leader, and his father was a luthier in Toronto. Music was a ubiquitous presence in Andrew’s life, and he quickly developed a talent for picking up any instrument. At the age of 13, Andrew started recording his own original songs, and by the time he got to university, he had recorded and played every instrument on his first full-length album. However, it wasn’t until his move to Western Canada in 2013 that he really found his footing as a musician. It was then that he formed the indie rock band Ten Minute Detour (TMD), which has two LPs under its belt and is actively playing stages across Canada while writing new material. In the fall of 2018, Andrew moved back to his Ontario roots, where he first found his passion for music. He hoped to further demonstrate his abilities as a songwriter, producer, and performer, and so he released a new song every month in 2019. Listeners can expect to hear influences of grunge, folk, and pop in Andrew’s newest material. Though no two songs will sound the same, Andrew’s creativity and artistry coherently bind together the collection of singles with nods to his family roots, growing up, and finding ways to express what can be otherwise hard to say. Andrew is now in the midst of recording and releasing a handful of songs throughout 2023 as he looks to venture further down the path and explore his solo songwriting in depth. One of his newest singles is “Foreign Fixtures,” a mellow indie rock track that was written and recorded in a post-COVID fog at Andrew’s cabin in Quebec. The song explores what it feels like to daydream and the hidden magic in letting one’s mind actively rest and explore their subconscious thoughts, using them as a tool to craft songs melodically and lyrically. “Foreign Fixtures” is reminiscent of the styles of Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver, and the likes. It’s perfect for early-morning risers and late-night study sessions. Andrew’s passion for music is evident in every note of his compositions, and his love of creativity shines through in his unique and compelling style.
