Claire Davis is a soulful and powerful artist who draws inspiration from the golden years of ’60s and ’70s soul music. Known for her mighty vocals, Davis has made a name for herself as a frontwoman and background vocalist in the Toronto music scene, performing with legends such as Martha Reeves, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, and Jully Black, as well as rising Toronto artists Charlotte Day Wilson, Jessie Reyez, and Daniel Caesar. In 2021, Davis released her debut solo EP, Thrive, which was recorded to tape and explores themes of relationships and heartbreak. The title track centers on the importance of self-love and taking care of oneself. The EP was a success, selling out its vinyl presales in just over a day. Davis’s upcoming LP, Get it Right, is set to be released in the spring of 2023 and features some of Toronto’s top musicians. The album explores themes of self-worth, relationships, and family dynamics, drawing from Davis’s personal journey of breaking toxic cycles and forging her own path. One of the tracks on the album is “Times Have Changed,” which was composed collaboratively with some of Canada’s best in the soul and R&B industry. Toronto production house Safe Spaceship created the music, which was then brought to Davis to write the melody and lyrics with the help of Kyla Charter. La-Nai Gabriel added a powerful horn arrangement, performed by Northern Soul Horns. The lyrics are a personal account of Davis’s journey of self-discovery and breaking toxic cycles in her family, and the song captures the pain and hope that come with that process. If you’re a fan of classic soul and R&B, be sure to give Claire Davis a listen. Her powerful and emotive vocals will transport you back in time and leave you wanting more.
