Upcoming artist Becca Rogers is an electro-pop producer and songwriter based in Washington, D.C. Becca grew up in Tucson, Arizona, and began playing the piano in elementary school. Her family tried to put her in piano lessons, but she refused to go because she thought formal lessons would make the piano feel like a chore. She continued to play the piano for fun. During her senior year of high school, a friend showed her song mashups he had made and said that he would teach her how to use production software. A few days later, he committed suicide. Becca decided to learn production to make the music he would never make. Becca moved to Massachusetts for college and signed up for a class called “Technology Through Music.” A few weeks into the class, she won a production contest. One day, she discovered a book on the floor of a dorm — Musicophilia, by the neurologist Oliver Sacks. At the time, her mother was suffering from memory loss, and she was fascinated by music’s ability to trigger old memories. She decided to study neuroscience and music, and she transferred to a new college. She interned at her university’s recording studio and took a production class, where she won a jingle contest. The following summer, she volunteered with the Music Armstrong Center for Music and Medicine in NYC. After college, she continued to make music but prioritized a VR tech startup she co-founded and a non-profit she worked for. At the beginning of the pandemic, she reunited with a friend to make music together. They formed a due called Strawberry Aqua and released two singles, ‘Last Dance’ and ‘Walk Away.’ With the release of her newest single “123” (feat. Joe Bills), they project a fascinating sound that will surely grasp your ears. Beginning with vibrant instrumentation leading onto Joe Bills’s sweet and bright vocals they capture the song entirely. Explaining the track a bit further it captures the feeling of love at first sight: the lyrics explore the feeling of yearning and desire when you see someone who you immediately fall for. For the first 2 minutes, the singer imagines himself walking up to a girl at a club and asking her to dance, saying “123, won’t you dance with me?” A bright marimba synth creates a tropical, carefree, and confident feeling. The song builds up to the singer finally working up the confidence to ask her to dance. To the vocals and production, this single will certainly have you dancing. It would just be perfect for a late-night drive or hanging out with some friends. Go stream “123” (feat. Joe Bills).
