Breaking Boundaries with Alexandra John’s Anthemic “Taking Off”

Alexandra John is a brother-and-sister duo based in Los Angeles, blending their shared artistry into an infectious brand of Nu-Disco Pop. Twins Liza and Weston Cain have been connected since birth, their bond not just familial but musical. Growing up in a San Francisco household steeped in music, they developed their talents early. Liza immersed herself in performing arts, singing, acting, dancing, and playing piano, while Weston picked up the drums at four, later expanding to guitar and piano. Together, their complementary energies merge into a sound that draws from legends like Earth, Wind & Fire and Stevie Wonder while embracing contemporary influences such as Daft Punk and Dua Lipa.

The duo’s music isn’t just catchy; it’s soul-stirring and boundary-pushing, addressing universal themes like anxiety, addiction, grief, and healing. Their 2022 debut introduced the world to their evocative style with singles like “Demons,” “Strung Out,” and “Lock Me Down,” culminating in their first EP, Healing. The momentum carried into 2023 with “Lonely Night” and “Love Like This,” alongside performances at iconic Los Angeles venues like The Hotel Cafe and The Peppermint Club.

A transformative experience came in September 2023 when Alexandra John joined LAAMP, a prestigious nine-month music program in Santa Monica led by Stargate’s Tor Hermansen and Mikkel Erikson. The program pushed Liza and Weston to new creative heights, refining their craft through intensive collaboration and mentorship. Reflecting on the experience, Liza described it as both a musical and personal evolution, while Weston highlighted the unparalleled opportunity for creative synergy.

Their newest single, “Taking Off,” marks a significant chapter in their journey. Co-written with David Blackwood and Zachary S. Cohan, the track combines dance pop and disco with anthemic lyrics and Liza’s silky vocals, creating a nostalgic yet fresh listening experience. The song embodies a spirit of artistic freedom, encouraging listeners to break boundaries, trust their instincts, and let go of limits. Weston shares that their goal was to craft something that inspires both movement and reflection.

Accompanying the release is a music video co-directed by Liza and Trey Fanjoy, a celebrated figure known for her work with Dolly Parton, Taylor Swift, and Sheryl Crow. The video, set in the retro-futuristic world of AJ Airlines, brings the track’s message to life, transporting viewers into a dazzling realm of limitless possibilities. Liza explains that the visual concept mirrors the song’s energy, inviting audiences on a journey of empowerment and imagination.

With “Taking Off,” Alexandra John solidifies their place as one of California’s most exciting new voices in pop. Their unique ability to weave nostalgia with modern innovation ensures their music resonates deeply, leaving an indelible mark on listeners and setting the stage for an even brighter future.
