Dana McCoy, a singer-songwriter known for her intimate and heartfelt music, has captivated listeners with her unique ability to make them feel like they’re already best friends. Drawing inspiration from the artists she grew up listening to in Maryland—such as Prince, Mariah Carey, TLC, and Jill Scott—along with contemporary favorites like Solange, Olivia Dean, Snoh Aalegra, and Chloe x Halle, McCoy crafts songs that celebrate vulnerability and self-love.
In her own words, McCoy aims for her music and art to be a landscape where people can find different aspects of themselves without feeling constrained to a particular role. This ethos shines through in her music, which encourages listeners to embrace their authentic selves. Over the years, her work has been recognized by various music blogs, including Fashionably Early, Early Rising, A1234, We Found New Music, and The Wild Honey Pie. Her single, “Night After Night,” featured on Spotify’s Butter, Fresh Finds, and Fresh Finds: The Wave playlists, has garnered over 1 million streams.
In 2022, McCoy released her debut EP, ‘To Those Who Wait,’ which further solidified her place in the music world. Most recently, she composed music for the short film At Capacity and is now working on new music and projects set to be released in the second half of 2024. Among these new releases is her newest single, “All Black,” which was released on July 5th, 2024.
“All Black” marks a significant moment in McCoy’s career as she flips the script on one-sided love. Written with collaborator Kiah Victoria and produced by Benchwarmer (Miranda del Sol, Jefery Eli), this alt-R&B single is one of McCoy’s most vulnerable works to date. The song opens with a soft, lulling guitar that sets the stage for McCoy’s emotional vocal performance, bringing listeners face-to-face with her feelings of resentment and heartbreak.
Reflecting on the inspiration behind “All Black,” McCoy shares, “This song grapples with the relationships that promise so much but ultimately leave you stranded. It’s about accepting that disappointment and acknowledging pain even if the other person never will.” This heartfelt message resonates deeply, capturing the essence of her experiences and offering solace to those who have felt similarly.
“All Black” is the first single from her upcoming EP, When We Wake, and promises to be a poignant exploration of McCoy’s personal journey. As she continues to evolve as an artist, Dana McCoy remains committed to creating music that speaks to the heart, reminding us all of the power of vulnerability and the importance of self-love.
