Noah Derksen is a remarkable figure in the world of roots and Americana music. As an American citizen raised in the heart of the Canadian prairies, he carries with him the groundedness of harsh Manitoba winters combined with the bittersweet perspective of the American Dream’s unfulfilled promises. His unique background shapes his music, infusing it with a rare authenticity and emotional depth that resonates with listeners.
Currently residing in the West Broadway neighborhood of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Noah has been diligently crafting his third full-length album. This new project, once again produced by JUNO-award winner Murray Pulver, traces the arc of love from its inception to its end. The anticipation for this album is palpable, especially following the release of its first single, “Maybe Next Year,” now available on AWAL.
This upcoming album is the successor to Noah’s 2019 release, America, Dreaming. Also produced by Murray Pulver and featuring artwork by JUNO winner Roberta Landreth, America, Dreaming delves into Noah’s evolving identity as an American citizen. The album’s profound exploration of personal and national identity earned Noah the 2021 Canadian Folk Music Award for Emerging Artist of the Year.
Noah’s musical journey continues with his latest single, “Through It All.” Written in Boston with his friend Lindsay on a stunning December morning, the song captures the paradox of experiencing sorrow amidst beauty. Noah describes the day as painfully beautiful, with the sun shining so brightly that it made it hard to remember any sorrow. “Through It All” is, at its core, a love song. It emerged from a poignant moment in Noah’s life when he had just ended a long-term relationship. Despite everything being ostensibly perfect, he felt an inexplicable need to leave, a sentiment that many listeners will find relatable.
The song was recorded for SiriusXM’s Top of the Country competition last year, showcasing Noah’s exceptional talent and his ability to convey deep emotions through his music. His long, flowing auburn hair and the twinkle in his eye add to his charismatic stage presence, making him a beloved figure in the music community.
Noah Derksen’s music is a testament to the power of storytelling through song. His ability to weave personal experiences with broader themes of identity, love, and loss creates a rich tapestry of sound that captivates and moves his audience. As he continues to evolve as an artist, his work promises to leave an indelible mark on the roots and Americana music scene.
