Ebba Åsman, the talented Swedish trombonist, songwriter, and producer, has taken the music world by storm with her unique blend of jazz, funk, and hip-hop influences. From touring the globe with renowned artists to crafting her own expressive compositions, Ebba’s journey has been marked by a deep love for music and a quest for creative freedom. Ebba’s introduction to the trombone may have been a stroke of luck, as she stumbled upon the instrument due to long waiting lists at her local music school. Little did she know that this serendipitous encounter would shape her future in unimaginable ways. Fuelled by pure joy and an innate fascination, Ebba’s passion for the trombone grew rapidly. At just seven years old, she immersed herself in the music of her idol, Nils Landgren, drawing inspiration from his soulful solos and infectious funk grooves. While her peers adorned their walls with pop icons, Ebba proudly displayed posters of Nils Landgren, her true musical hero. A pivotal moment arrived when Ebba was 12 years old, fulfilling her childhood dream of performing alongside Nils Landgren during a school concert. This experience solidified her determination to pursue a career in music. Nils became her mentor, offering guidance and support as she honed her skills. Their collaboration and friendship continue to this day, exemplifying the profound impact that her idol has had on her musical journey. High school led Ebba to Stockholm, where she attended the prestigious cultural and music school, Södra Latin. Although it seemed like a promising start, the competitive environment and the pressure to conform to established norms began to take a toll on her artistic spirit. After three years at Södra Latin and further studies at the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music, Ebba found herself longing for a musical liberation, free from the confines of traditional education. Her ensuing years became a transformative period of self-discovery and musical liberation. Ebba sought to break free from the rigid expectations of music schools and reconnect with her authentic creative voice. This journey of introspection and exploration led her to release her album “Be Free,” through Broder John’s label, Hoopdiggas. The album “Be Free” showcases Ebba’s remarkable talent as a trombonist and her willingness to defy genre boundaries. Blending elements of jazz and hip-hop, Ebba’s trombone takes center stage, guiding listeners through a rich soundscape. However, she finds little interest in being confined by genre labels or external definitions of jazz music. “Be Free” symbolizes her desire to transcend limitations and embrace her unique tonal language. For Ebba, the album represents not only a rebellion against traditional norms but also a personal journey of self-acceptance and freedom. It is about embracing one’s true identity and rejecting societal expectations. In a world that often pressures individuals to fit into predefined boxes, “Be Free” encourages listeners to prioritize peace of mind over performance and to celebrate their individuality. Throughout the album, Ebba collaborates with talented musicians who share her diverse musical background, combining their jazz, big band, and pop influences. To further evolve her sound, she enlisted the help of hip-hop producers FloFilz and Moose Dawa. Their contributions bring a fresh perspective and a fusion of jazz and hip-hop elements, adding new dimensions to Ebba’s music. With empowering tracks such as “Power Through,” “Growth,” and “Trust Yourself,” “Be Free” encourages listeners to embrace their own perspectives and backgrounds. The instrumental compositions embody a message of empowerment and self-love. Through her music, Ebba invites us to let go of the need for approval and instead find solace in being true to ourselves. Ebba Åsman has broken free from the constraints of traditional music education and societal expectations, forging her own path as an artist. Her journey serves as a reminder that true artistic expression knows no boundaries. With “Be Free,” Ebba invites us all to join her in a musical liberation, celebrating individuality and embracing the beauty of self-acceptance.
